Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria (AMaGA Victoria) formerly Museums Australia (Victoria) supports the development of quality museums, collections care, knowledge, and specialised skills for museum work.
We support people from small and large museums in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Our services include professional development opportunities for paid staff, volunteers, independent contractors, and others who are interested in museums.
Vision
A dynamic Victorian museum and gallery sector embedded in community.
Charter
AMaGA Victoria promotes collecting organisations to all levels of government and the community, and fosters high standards in all aspects of museum and gallery management through research, policy formulation, publications, and training. AMaGA Victoria offers opportunities for advancement for paid staff, volunteers, contractors, and others interested in museums.
As the peak body for the Victorian museum and gallery industry, AMaGA Victoria aims to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas in ways which affirm the value of museums, stimulate debate about principles and standards, and inform and inspire staff, volunteers, and supporters.
Background
Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria was established as the peak body for museums in Victoria in 1993. Our 1,000+ museums include galleries, science centres, Indigenous Keeping Places, historical societies, historic houses, botanic gardens, zoos, aquaria, cultural centres, and archaeological monuments. Two-thirds of these are volunteer-run. Community museums care for an estimated 10 million objects in Victoria. We support and advocate for the development of quality museums, collections care, knowledge and specialised skills, and support the creative industries with key initiatives including the Accreditation Programs and Victorian Collections, the online portal to our State’s cultural treasures: www.victoriancollections.net.au.
